| Subject: | Kitchener Aero's Avionics Life Extension Program (ALEP) enhances Air Nunavut's service in remote regions. |
Kitchener, Ontario, CANADA - Kitchener Aero (KAAV) is a premiere avionics sales, installation, and integration firm. The focus of KAAV's technical expertise is in corporate and general aviation markets. Most recently, the company has been applying its expertise to the development and implementation of Avionics Life Extension Programs (ALEP's) for older turboprop type aircraft. These ALEP's center on extensive and unique avionics upgrades, often including new Autopilot and EFIS suites in addition to avionics, as well as Safety Systems such as Terrain Awareness/EGPWS, Collision Avoidance, and advanced Weather Avoidance and Moving Map technologies.
Air Nunavut is an Iqaluit, Nunavut based Canadian charter aircraft operator. Known formerly as Air Baffin, the company has been in operation for 14 years. This hard working enterprise provides critical air service to communities throughout Nunavut, Nunavik (northern Quebec) and Greenland with a fleet of King Air and Navajo aircraft. Operating regularly from remote areas, airfield and meteorological conditions are prime operational considerations for northern carriers.
Air Nunavut's most recent acquisition is a King Air 200 model manufactured in 1978 and fitted with Raisbeck and CAT (commuter) modifications. Kitchener Aero has recently completed an ALEP - enhancing the aircraft for multi-role operations within the Canadian North. The King Air had been equipped with the standard Collins ProLine 1 remote radio package, most of which was removed from the aircraft and replaced with a new digital avionics suite. The upgrade has improved the aircraft's payload, safety, and reliability.
As with all such retrofits undertaken, KAAV started with a full redesign of the main cockpit panel. The new cockpit centers on a Garmin GNS 530 #1 Nav/Com/GPS and Garmin GNS 430 #2 Nav/Com/GPS. Both the GPS systems are IFR Certified for GPS approach use. Also included in the package were Dual Garmin GTX 327 Digital Transponders w/Dual Mode C, a PS Engineering PMA 7000B Audio/ICS System with CD player, Dual Bendix/King KR 87 ADF's with Dual KNI 582 RMI's, a Bendix/King KHF 950 HF Comm, an Icarus "Sat-Talk" Iridium SatCom system, and a Universal Solid-State Cockpit Voice Recorder System.
These Turbo-Prop ALEP programs are surprisingly affordable. The benefits from such extensive upgrades are many, and include enhanced dispatch reliability, safety, and operational capabilities, as well as compliance with forthcoming mandated operational requirements such as TAWS/EGPWS, TCAS, and RVSM. Another key bonus has been substantial reductions to the aircraft empty weights through removal of the old avionics systems & associated wiring - in cases like this King Air it adds up to the equivalent of an additional passenger, or a bunch of extra fuel!
In conjunction with Mid-Canada Mod Center, KAAV have been recipients of various awards and accolades for business and technical excellence, and outstanding customer support. They operate facilities at both the Waterloo Regional (CYKF) and Toronto International (CYYZ) airports. This year also marks the 25th anniversary of Kitchener Aero's AMO.
